What Is Neurologically-Based Care?
Neurologically-based care is chiropractic care that starts with your nervous system. Your brain controls how every muscle fires, how every joint moves, and how much pain you feel. When that communication gets scrambled, you can end up with weakness, tightness, or pain that sticks around long after the original injury healed.
At Innate Chiropractic in Albany, CA, Dr. Stefan Cohen uses a group of nervous system techniques to find where the signal breaks down and correct it. Those techniques are P-DTR, Applied Kinesiology, Neuroemotional Technique, and KinEase Release Methods. They work alongside chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue care, and Dr. Cohen picks the right ones for each patient based on what the assessment shows.
When Pain Keeps Coming Back
A lot of patients come to us after trying physical therapy, massage, or regular chiropractic care. They got some relief, then hit a plateau. Or the pain went away and came back a few weeks later. Often the tissue has healed, but the nervous system is still running an old protective pattern.
We like to explain it as software and hardware. Adjustments and soft tissue work tune up the hardware, meaning your joints and muscles. Neurologically-based care updates the software, meaning the messages passing between your body and your brain. In our experience, treating both gives results a better chance of lasting. You can read more about this concept in Dr. Cohen's post Does Your Nervous System Need a Reboot?

What a Neurologically-Based Visit Looks Like
New patients start with a 60-minute evaluation. Dr. Cohen takes your history, then uses muscle testing to see which muscles, joints, or movement patterns are not communicating well with your nervous system. When he finds a trouble spot, he uses the technique that fits, retests the muscle, and checks that the change held.
P-DTR, AK testing, NET, and KinEase are all gentle and non-invasive. Many visits also include a chiropractic adjustment or soft tissue work in the same appointment. Some patients notice changes in pain, range of motion, or strength during the visit itself. With P-DTR, many patients see meaningful improvement within 2 to 4 sessions, and longer-standing problems usually take more.
Frequently Asked Questions about Neurologically-Based Care
Neurologically-based care is an approach that treats pain and movement problems by looking at how well your nervous system is communicating with your body. At Innate Chiropractic, that means using P-DTR, Applied Kinesiology, Neuroemotional Technique, and KinEase Release Methods to find where the signals break down and correct them. Chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue care are added when your case calls for them.
It means the care is built around the nervous system. Your brain and nerves decide how your muscles fire, how your joints move, and how pain is felt. A neurologically-based chiropractor checks that communication first, then treats the muscle, joint, or pattern sending the wrong signal, which is often a different spot from where it hurts.
There is no separate license for it. Every chiropractor is a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic, and "neurological chiropractor" is the phrase people use for chiropractors who focus on the nervous system. Some chiropractors also complete postgraduate programs in chiropractic neurology. Dr. Cohen's training is in specific neurologically-based techniques: more than 200 hours of P-DTR, more than 200 hours of AK with ICAK board certification, NET certification, and direct training in KinEase Release Methods.
Nervous system deterioration covers a wide range of medical conditions that need a physician's workup, so diagnosing them is outside what we do. What we see in the clinic are functional changes, where the nervous system is not coordinating the body as well as it could. Common examples are pain that keeps returning after treatment, muscles that feel weak or seem to switch off, poor balance or coordination, repeated injuries in the same area, and tension that does not ease with rest.
Numbness, tingling, or weakness that is getting worse should be checked by your physician. Sudden weakness on one side, trouble speaking, a drooping face, a sudden severe headache, or loss of bladder or bowel control are emergencies, so call 911. If an exam turns up something that needs medical care, we will refer you to the right provider.
It depends on how long the problem has been there and how many things are contributing to it. With P-DTR, many patients see meaningful improvement within 2 to 4 sessions. Long-standing or layered problems usually take more visits. Dr. Cohen will go over a plan with you after your first evaluation.
In many cases, yes. Dr. Cohen bills these techniques as part of your visit, and they are often covered by insurance. Coverage depends on your plan, so call our office at (510) 528-5216 and we can go over your benefits before you book.
